After making a £53 million ($67m) move in the summer from Southampton, Lavia has played just one match for the Blues. Unfortunately in the same fixture against Crystal Palace, he picked up a thigh injury which once again sidelined him for a lengthy period. Notably, his debut was delayed until December as he was nursed muscle and ankle injuries, and now a fresh setback while recovering from the thigh injury has brought down the curtains on his participation for this season.

In an Instagram post directed to Chelsea fans, Lavia wrote: "Hi Chelsea family. As you may know and despite my countless efforts, I will be missing the remainder of the season. This has been a frustrating season for me, not being able to help my team-mates. I love this squad, this badge and being on the pitch more than anything. Trust that I have given my all every day to get back. Thank you for the love, support and critics because they all affect me positively and keep me going. I can’t wait to give it back and share many special moments together. See you soon."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lavia was hoping to return to training in March, which would have given him a glimmer of hope of featuring for Belgium at the Euros. However, that possibility has been snuffed out. Confirming his injury in an official statement the club wrote: "Midfielder Romeo Lavia is to unfortunately miss the remainder of our 2023-24 campaign following a setback in his recovery. Recent medical assessments have confirmed that Lavia, who sustained a significant thigh injury against Crystal Palace back in December, will not feature again this season."
