Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners over Real Madrid on Wednesday but the mythology surrounding both Salah and Mbappe was shattered somewhat by their failures from 12 yards. The Frenchman saw his spot-kick saved by Caoimhín Kelleher, before Salah slashed his effort wide from 12 yards. Mbappe missed at 1-0 while Salah was bailed out by the fact Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool's second six minutes after his miss.

WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot told : "In both situations you think it is probably going to go in. Both missed so they showed us today they are both human beings. In Mbappe's case Kelleher was outstanding. He has done remarkable for us, just like our other goalkeeper who has been remarkable too."

Kelleher, meanwhile, has confirmed that he never doubted he would save Mbappe's spot-kick, saying: "I was confident and thankfully went the right way again. It is a big result. It is a massive result for us. We wanted to come out tonight and put on a performance and well done to the lads for doing that."
